MacOS Monterey was released a couple of months ago, and includes many great new features like Share Play, a simplified Safari tab bar, Quick Note, Global Control (not yet available in beta) and more. Can’t wait to try macOS Monterey? Check out this post to learn how to download it!

However, there are always issues when it comes to downloading new software. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide on how to fix the most common macOS Monterey installation issues.

Problem 1: macOS Monterey can’t be downloaded

First, you need to check if your Mac is compatible. Apple has released the following hardware requirements for installing macOS Monterey:

• iMac – Late 2015 and later
• iMac Pro – 2017 and later
• MacBook Air – early 2015 and later
• MacBook Pro – Early 2015 and later
• Mac Pro – Late 2013 and later
• Mac mini – Late 2014 and later
• MacBook – early 2016 and later

If your Mac isn’t on the list, we’re sorry to say you can’t download macOS Monterey.

• Make sure your Mac has enough free space.

Downloading and installing macOS Monterey requires about 20 GB of space. If you don’t have enough right now, you can use Cleaner One Pro to clean your system and free up some space.

• Check your Wi-Fi connection.

You can switch to another network or connect an Ethernet cable to avoid connection failures.

Problem 2: macOS Monterey won’t install on your Mac

• Check your available drive space to make sure it is more than the 20 GB required by the update. You can use Cleaner One Pro to free up more storage space for the new operating system.

• Still can’t install macOS Monterey? Please boot your Mac into safe mode (also called single user mode).

Restart your Mac and immediately press the Shift button.
Reinstall macOS 12 Monterey while your Mac is in safe mode.
Restart your Mac.

Problem 3: Mac won’t turn on after installing macOS Monterey

• Verify your Mac’s hard drive with Disk Utility in macOS Recovery mode.

Restart your Mac and immediately press Command + R to boot into macOS recovery mode.
Release theses keys when you see the loading bar.
Select Disk Utility from the macOS Tools menu.
Select your startup disk or macOS volume in Disk Utility’s left sidebar.
Click First Aid in the top center and click Run to repair this disk.
When done, click Done and restart your Mac as normal.

Problem 4: MacOS Monterey gets stuck or freezes from time to time

There are two main reasons why your Mac may lag or freeze: CPU overload or your Mac’s out of RAM.

• Use Activity Monitor to check CPU and memory usage.

Go to Finder > Go > Utilities and open Activity Monitor.

Select the CPU tab, choose the program that is using a lot of memory and click the “X” icon to force quit.

Select the “Memory” tab, choose the program that is taking up too much memory and click the “X” icon to force quit it.

• Use Cleaner One Pro to free up RAM memory.

Problem 5: Universal Control cannot be used on macOS Monterey

This is because Universal Control is not yet available in beta. The full release of macOS Monterey is expected this fall.

Problem 6: Your Mac is overheating after installing macOS Monterey

• Close unnecessary browser tabs.

It may come as a surprise, but tabs in Safari, Google Chrome, and other browsers take up a lot of resources on your Mac. When you open many tabs, the CPU usage will always be very high, which will cause your Mac to overheat.

• Use Activity Monitor to close some processes.

Go to Finder > Go > Utilities and open Activity Monitor.
Select the CPU tab, choose the program that is consuming a lot of resources and click on the “X” icon to force quit it.
• Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

The System Management Controller (SMC) is the component that controls the keyboard, fan, battery, and other important internal devices. If you notice that your Mac’s fan often runs at full speed, you should consider resetting the SMC.

First, you need to check whether or not your Mac has a T2 chip. To do this, please click here.
For detailed steps to reset the SMC, please refer to this Apple Support page.

• Use Activity Monitor to close power-hungry programs.

Go to Finder > Go > Utilities and open Activity Monitor.
Select the Power tab.
Close processes with high “Power Impact” and “12-Hour Power”.

• Lower the screen brightness

In summary

Given that the current macOS Monterey is only a beta, bugs and instability are inevitable. Keep your expectations until the full official version is released, which will include the exciting Universal Control and other interesting features. In the meantime, make sure to prepare enough free space on your Mac with Cleaner One Pro. good luck!
